Brussels is very much an under rated capital city. When we think of city breaks we think of vibrant night life, culture, wonderful restaurants and great shopping and all of those things can be found in Belgium's capital. This is very much a city of café culture and the shopping opportunities are excellent with stores ranging from high street big names to designer chic.
The Rue Neuve is the largest shopping street in Belgium and houses mostly large international chain stores while the Avenue Louise and Boulevard de Waterloo area are home to many designer shops and boutiques. If you are looking for something more unique you can find many smaller shops in the area between the beautiful Grand Place and the Rue Lemonnier.
Brussels is home to the headquarters of the European Union and this is something which the locals are very proud of. This city also boasts a huge array of museums and other attractions which include the 103 meter representation of an iron crystal, the Atomium!
Brussels though is famous world wide for its beef festival which takes place here each year in September. People travel from all over Europe for this event so booking early is necessary to avoid disappointment. If beer is your thing then you must visit one of the many breweries here. Cantillion Brewery is a popular choice.
Another of the attraction here is the Grand place. This stunning city square was once described by Victor Hugo as the most beautiful square in Europe and is top f most peoples must see list while here.
Many people choose pedal bike as their mode of transport while here and there are several bike tours available which are not to challenging and offer an excellent way to explore the city. There are also several bus tour available and the hop on hop off tours are a very popular choice allowing you to visit many attraction in a short amount of time.
There are many places to eat and drink in Belgium. The food here is very rich and similar to French cuisine in that it is largely fish and game based. Muscles served with French fries is a local speciality and a perfect accompaniment to a cold beer. Aridness sausage and pate are also often on the menu and are very tasty as a snack or starter. Cream . Butter and wine feature strongly and this being Belgium beer is also often used in cooking.
Brussels also has a very varied and active nightlife scene with many theatres, bars clubs also some great street festivals. There are also dozens of cinemas and a wide selection of discos which attract a young and hip crowd. The discos and the majority of the night-time cafes can be found in two main areas of the city. The uptown Porte Louise area, and the downtown area between Place Roger and Place de la Bourse.
