Madrid City Breaks
Madrid is famous for world class palaces, tapas bars and it's late night party atmosphere. The Prado, Thyssen and Reina Sofia are musuems which are definitely worth a visit.
In the summer there are additional things to do as a result of the "Summer in the City" programme. The highlights include steet parties and jazz concerts amongst other things.
Mid-May is a good time to visit when the city takes to the streets for the festival of it's patron saint San Isidro. There are nightly gigs and classical concerts during the day.
For those in need of retail therapy ceramics, designer clothes and antiques are best sought out in Salamanca. Madrid has a reputation as a party city and this reputation is justified. El terraceo (terrace-hopping) is the preferred nightlife activity during the summer.
Visit Viva Madrid in Los Austrias which has amazing floor to ceiling tiling. For a younger funkier scene try Malasaria which atttacts a younger crowd. For bars open until 2am the Plaza Santa Ana and the streets around are the place to be.
There are also numerous restaurants to choose from for those looking for a more relaxing night out. The best time to visit is during the Sring or the Autumn i.e. April - May or September - October. Summer is very hot and temperatures can reach 40 degrees celcius. In contrast winter is very cold and temperatures can drop to minus 5 degrees celcius.
August is the busiest month and the city can be very crowded during this time. Many locals abandon the city at this time because of the heat and the crowds.
